Helping Caterpillar roll out their Caterpillar Production System (CPS) at their tier one supply network in China.

Situation:

Caterpillar began to roll-out their Caterpillar Production System (CPS) along with six-sigma among China tier one suppliers. The goal being to implement a common enterprise-wide order-to-delivery process to improve safety, quality and velocity, add capacity, and improve cost management.

6 Sigma is foundational to CPS and improving order-to-delivery processes—everything from the time a customer places an order until he or she receives the finished product.

Approach:

Despite having an extensive team of their own, Caterpillar looked to outsource specific expertize to a firm who had both strong six-sigma and lean capabilities but also a firm with strong working knowledge of dealing directly with China manufacturing suppliers. Infinite Sum was chosen to help them train selected China suppliers in CPS in addition to helping them implement the CPS solution on-site at the supplier factories. The team was made up primarily of lean consultants from Infinite Sum Shanghai office, who were initially trained in CPS to enable them to deliver to Caterpillars expectations at China suppliers.

Results:

Successfully implemented Caterpillar Production System and six-sigma at selected China suppliers, which will enable Caterpillar to meet corporate goals relative to China performance.
